Types of RVs
& campers

Class A, B, C, trailers and more — explained. A quick, honest guide to every RV type and what each one is actually best for, so you can pick the right rig with confidence.

Motorhomes (you drive them)

Motorhomes are self-propelled — the living space and the engine are one vehicle. They split into three classes:

  • Class A — the big bus-style motorhomes. The most living space and luxury, but the largest to drive and the thirstiest on fuel. Best for large groups and long trips.
  • Class B (campervan) — the smallest, built inside a van. Easiest to drive and park, best on fuel, ideal for couples. Less interior space.
  • Class C — the middle ground and the most popular rental. Cab-over bed, full kitchen and bathroom, sleeps 6–8, yet drives like a large van. The family favourite.

Towables (you tow them)

Towables have no engine — you pull them with a truck or SUV. They’re cheaper to buy and let you unhitch at camp, but you need a capable tow vehicle and some towing confidence:

  • Travel trailer — the most common towable; huge range of sizes, towable behind many trucks and large SUVs.
  • Fifth wheel — larger, towed with a special hitch in a pickup bed; very spacious, needs a serious truck.
  • Tent trailer (pop-up) — folds down small and light; the most affordable, easiest-to-tow way into camping.
  • Truck camper — a unit that slides into a pickup bed; compact and go-anywhere, but tighter inside.

Which RV type is right for you?

For most renters — especially families and first-timers — a Class C motorhome is the sweet spot: enough space and facilities for a real trip, but easy to drive with no special licence and nothing to tow. Couples who value simplicity and fuel economy often prefer a campervan. RV Best’s managed fleet focuses on the Class C precisely because it’s the type that suits the most people for Alberta trips.

RV types FAQ

RVs split into two families. Motorhomes (you drive them) come in Class A, Class B campervans and Class C. Towables (you tow them) include travel trailers, fifth wheels, tent trailers and truck campers. Each balances space, drivability and cost differently.

Class A is the largest, bus-style motorhome with the most space but the hardest to drive. Class B is a compact campervan, easiest to drive and best on fuel. Class C sits in between — a cab-over family motorhome that sleeps 6–8 and still drives like a large van.

A Class B campervan is the easiest — it drives like a tall van. Among larger units, a Class C is the most manageable, which is why it’s the most popular rental for first-timers and families.

A Class C motorhome is usually best for families: it sleeps 6–8, has a full kitchen and bathroom, needs no special licence and nothing to tow. It’s the type RV Best’s managed fleet is built around.
